Title: What does "karma" do?

I've been looking at it for a while but it doesn't seem to be anything more than a + or - button for no reason other than to show other users how popular another user is.

I never new what karma exactly means, but its a thing for fun. For me karma is some kind of reputation, it shows how much someone is loved or hated, it can be manipulated with it, but that thing is for fun. many users likes that. Also we have topics/posts rating system and some other things. I was thinking about to add Like button system, but without dislike is somehow pf.. not interesting.
