General Discussion / A sad rant
« on: 30 January 2018, 08:25:25 »
I'm getting burned out. I usually play one game at a time, to the extreme. I frickin love TQ, a lot. I have put at least 500 hours into it since Ragnarok came out. But I'm starting to get bummed out on it, due to the scarcity of gear, the brutal RNG, and my lack of mental capacity to excel. Really good pieces are infrequent, while I continue to collect vaults full of certain repeating drops (epic+ throwing weapons seem heavily over seeded with Ragnarok installed, for example). With Grim Dawn, getting decent resists is fair straightforward, even in legendary. With TQ you have to have superhuman patience with relentless, mind-numbing levels of farming, and even if you do that you are going to hit a wall sooner or later when you need at least one good Legendary farming toon, and if they don't have the gear for it, you are screwed...the drops are always way underleveled for the point you are at in the game. For once, I would like it to be a little simpler for just one of my toons, instead of spending hours trying to figure out the right combination of gear and stat point allocations to pull it off. And frankly, I think I suck at it. I just don't have quite the mathematical mind that most of the veterans here have, I suspect. The fact that TQVault has a very simplistic, name-only search function doesn't help. I have to hover my mouse over each and every item to check the stats, dump a ton of gear into my toons inventory and then test and test to get any semblance of effectiveness. I have never gotten even close to the kind of effectiveness I see you discussing like it's routine. The way it goes is I have an awesome time for 60 or so levels and then I hit a point where either my resists, armor, stats or bonuses or a combination of them suffers badly and I become ineffective. I feel like I simply lack the innate ability to see the big picture like most of you do on a certain level. For example: I was just falling in love with my Diviner. I saw my health starting to drop a bit too quickly so I went looking for info. I had some ideas, such as the ones I talked about in my Diviner post. They then quickly get shot down by more experienced players. Then I check the guides: hrrrm here's a guide on Kirmizi with an uber Diviner based on %health reduction and %damage converted to health, an unkillable farming machine! But nope, apparently health reduction doesn't scale and bosses now have tons of Vitality resists. I still tried it, equipping a Harrowing staff with Anubis affix and speccing into Ternion. But yep, it sucks, super slow kill speed and even with all the gear I farmed over that 500 hours, my resists are lacking. In short, I want this game to still have my enthralled but I'm finding it harder and harder to feel happy about launching the game.

That's it, just wanted to vent a bit. I hope it doesn't sound like I'm hating on the game because there is a reason I put hundreds of hours into it. I just find myself rerolling a new toon out of necessity when I would rather push on with the same one, and it's bumming me out.

Immortal Diviner
I have no idea what is going on there, but it looks good. x% of damage returned to health? pre-AE?

i bet those who say distortion wave falls off are those who say casters suck in this game.. actually, if you're looking for advice for casters, you should be asking those who have played successful casters throughout the game.. unfortunately, spirit doesn't give much for true casters.. but try this: max necrosis for the vit damage in DR (if you haven't already).. then wear resistance reduction gear not from a weapon.. i would advice Polaris and monkey kings trickery (both).. then spread RR though ternion before attacking with distortion wave.. also max liche king and hypnotic gaze.. but it could've been easier if you had chosen hunting or storm instead of spirit (for true casters that is.. ternion is not a true caster for me)

edit: i just remembered you'll use ternion so a boreas will work or a green staff with shen-nongs

about that reduction to enemy health.. it is resisted by vitality resist but it does not scale with %vit damage.. health reduction scales with a monster's current health, not total health so the less health a boss has, the less damage you deal.. also per changelog, bosses now have 85/90/95% resistance to health reduction so good luck on that

Good, because I love Distortion Wave. Set it up correctly and you take out a whole pack. If I miss, DR takes care of the rest. When I say Caster, I pretty much mean Wave/DR. That's all I really need at this point, maybe a few shots from Neith's.

So there is no way to scale %reduction...that does make sense. But Pazuzu mentioned a Harrowing staff, so it must be useful somehow.

When you say to max Lich King, did you mean the base skill? I have most of his stuff maxed except his base.

Finally, bosses have high resists to health reduction, but wouldn't maxing out Necrosis take care of that (if the reduction is additive), or is it a multiplicative DR reduction?

Edit (more stuff): I thought any non-weapon gear such as Polaris (which I don't have) only procs when you get hit. Also Monkey King's Trickery is pretty damn low RR, is it really worth it?

Finally, I am not married to Ternion. It just seemed like the indicated option if Wave is going to start getting weak. I'll post my current build here in a bit.

Mine is a melee ternion user. absolutely destroys anything with a few hits. Tried him out in ae and damage still seems good. not sure what has changed in spirit skills now. but im using a harrowing staff and strength gear

Melee with Ternion? How does that work? Weapon switch?

So, this is my first true caster toon. Right now I'm halfway through Legendary so Psionic Immolation is still effective. My playstyle for now is Immolation via Distortion wave, Temporal Rift via Distort Reality when mobbed, and clean up any stragglers with throwing (Neith's Will since it has Vitality damage). However, I call tell Wave is starting to drop off in effectiveness as I was warned about. I was thinking to switch over to Ternion attack, until I realized that there are no Staves with Vitality damage as primary (!). Well, I have one but it's very low level. Almost every buff in this class is Vitality, hardly any Elemental. The weird thing is there is also hardly any Vitality attack spells. So tons of Vitality buffs, but no attacks other than the underwhelming Life Drain. And potentially a great Elemental attack in Ternion, but no Elemental buffs other than a moderate amount, and only briefly, from Unearthly Power. Finally, weirdly enough, a bunch of Bleeding damage buffs (meh). So what's the play here if I want to go caster playstyle throughout the game? I mean there is the Lich, who has plenty of Vitality attacks, which I have maxed out...I'm not sure how much mileage I'm getting from him, seems like he tends to focus on one mob at a time and is not a particularly fast killer, even though I have all my Vitality buffs pretty much maxed out. Then again I'm not a very good Pet player, as I do not actively manage them.

Edit: Just discovered something veerry interesting: % reduction to enemy health is Vitality damage. Oooh. This changes things.

General Discussion / Life leech and Life drain
« on: 28 January 2018, 23:40:37 »
Looking at the description vs tooltip on the Spirit skill Life Drain, it says Vitality damage. I assume this is NOT life leech damage. Is there a skill that does life leech damage? There seems to be a ton of gear that gives a percentage bonus to life leech, but not much in the way of raw life leech damage from anything. Just a tad of flat damage here and there on weapons and some retaliation on armor. There is also x% damage converted to health, assuming this can be any damage type and does not benefit from bonuses to life leech. I'm wondering if there are any builds that focus on life leech somehow, with the plenitude of bonuses to be found on gear.

Yeah something is wrong. Nothing happens no matter what key I bind :(

I have "Select all pets" set to Z and once they're all selected then I left click on whatever I want them targeting. Of course, you can bind something like the Core Dweller to go in first ahead of you.

Do you get any indicator (outline, highlight etc) when the pets are selected? I think something is wrong, nothing happens when I press or hold any related key.

General Discussion / Pet attack button?
« on: 27 January 2018, 23:03:14 »
I'm not much of a pet user, but trying out the Lich as supposedly it's good. I have "pet attack" bound to CTRL and, secondarily, the T key. However when I hold either down and left click on a mob, nothing happens. I am doing this before I gain aggro so as to have them tank. However, nothing happens. Trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong, or if this is some kind of glitch or bug with my system.

General Discussion / Problem with keypresses in TQ
« on: 24 January 2018, 23:45:11 »
I am unable to register simultaneous key presses in TQ, including mouse buttons. For example, if I want to Thunderstrike a group of mobs, then hold down LMB for main attack, while dropping Runic Mines and Seal of Fate I must release LMB for a full second before dropping the mines, and I cannot drop SoF and Mines at the same time. The keypresses are not buffered at all, and the game cannot accept multiple simultaneous button presses (about 70% of the time this is true, hard to be exact with a bunch of things going on). I wonder if this is an issue with TQ or my laptop. Laptops often have memory-resident programs that govern the keyboard, mouse, trackpad etc. I am looking into both sides and checking with you guys if this is common behavior in the meantime. Perhaps there is a key buffering section in an .INI file for TQ somewhere? Now that I'm into Legendary it's becoming more and more "fraction of a second" timing and this is now a problem, so thank you in advance.

EDIT: It could also be too MUCH buffering, for example a ton of LMB clicks filling up the keyboard buffer and preventing other presses from registering.

General Discussion / Re: Runesmith build advice
« on: 24 January 2018, 23:39:41 »
This was my first toon when I picked TQ back up after many years away. I did no math or theorycrafting, just played her the way it seemed intended, a hybrid elemental damage fighter. I had hoped there were more +%Elemental gear in the game, but gear in general is much more scarce than other ARPGs, which is part of it's charm. I don't have the energy to revise the build since I do that constantly with my other toons. It is certainly a balancing act, having STR/INT/DEX all be important, but one positive side effect is I can wear pretty much anything with a bit of reduction gear.

i seem to remember that with maxed resilience (i mean ultimate max with +4), adrenaline triggers often enough..
When I put points into Resilience, the CD does not decrease below 6 seconds, so I assumed that was the minimum

if you're choosing between rune weapon and batter for your LMB, i vote rune weapon
Nah, I keep Rune Weapon on LMB. I meant mixing it in occasionally from the hotbar. The concern is that Rune Weapon immediately decreases charges when you aren't attacking, and using Batter would take away precious seconds from building said charges. Rune Weapon has a very high number of potential charge levels, iirc 1 for each atttack up to something like 12 charges

First and foremost, it's really important whether you want to use Transmutation or not.
Indeed I am. Seems like a must with Rune.

The bonus health regeneration is good, and so is the total speed from Defensive Reaction, but that's about it. Since you're barely dealing any physical damage, a percentile increase to that doesn't do much at all.
So the physical damage is added after the Elemental from Transmutation, not before, I assume. In that case, it's really only the speed I'm benefiting from, since my health regen is too low to even benefit from the boost. Gear is scarce in Legendary for me and I have to make all kinds of compromises, health regen being low priority for a tanky character like mine. That said, because of my lousy resists I am chugging potions like crazy.

General Discussion / Runesmith build advice
« on: 24 January 2018, 04:32:39 »
I have been letting my melee Runesmith in legendary idle while I tried out some other masteries. Rune is a new mastery and I've never run Defense before, so I need some advice.

- Adrenaline doesn't fire very often, in spite of the fact that recharge is capped at the lowest possible, 6 seconds. Does it have to be a melee hit that triggers it? If so that might explain it, considering my block chance is near 100% and my shield recharge is -100%. Also, can Adrenaline activate before the end of it's duration? I assumed that was the point of getting the CD lower and lower with it's synergy.
- Is Batter incompatible with Rune Weapon? In Grim Dawn, I avoided non-charging attacks if I had a charging attack bound to L mouse, on the theory that one less hit=one less charge. I'm concerned the every time I use Batter is one more second less of Rune Weapon charging. Plus, Batter doesn't seem to be very high damage overall, synergy included. Damage from my shield is slightly lower than my main hand weapon so I'm not really seeing the point.
- Pulverize, Disable and Shield Smash: What are the respective triggers for these to proc? Getting hit, dealing out a hit, etc? These are mostly CC procs, and I have them all at or around maxed out. Wondering if they are worth the investment.
- I read an old guide on the relationship between armor and shield. IIRC, you should use a high armor value on your gear to maximize the shield's defensive effectiveness. Can't find the guide now, can someone elaborate on this? I have good armor but in legendary I'm having to sacrifice resists for high armor values.

Thanks for the help.

I am absolutely dead sick of devs messing with the mechanics each time they get their grubby little fingers on TQ, thus invalidating the hard-won info available on the 'nets. "We are adding Act IV..change everything!". "We are making an Anniversary Edition...change everything!". "We just bought the rights to TQ, and we're gonna add a new Act...change everything!". It's time to STOP!

Reading through the replies, I suspect that the quality of the fog differs between GPU and 3D driver settings. Therefore experience of fog in different acts will be unique to the person's setup. 3D fog is a specific function of the GPU/driver and is implemented in different ways. For me it's much harder to see through in Act V, and there are many more maps in that act that contain it compared to other acts.
