Title: Crate announces 2nd expansion for Grim Dawn
Post by: Medea Fleecestealer on 11 March 2018, 22:36:09
Crate announced on the 5th March 2018 that they were working on a 2nd expansion for the game entitled Forgotten Gods.  This should be released later this year.

It'll be a desert - in that sense I suppose it is though other games feature deserts as well.  But otherwise I think Crate will give us their own unique take on it.  :)

Yep I'm pretty hyped for the next expansion, I'm planning on entering it in Ultimate difficulty for maximum challenge with my 'Paladin' build :O :D

Medea, will you be gaining exclusive testing access to Forgotten Gods when closed beta begins (if it hasn't already..)  You are a longtime playtester if I'm not mistaken? In any case, that'll be so kool

Yes, I will be playtesting (if the damned Asian spammers give me any time to do so) when Crate let's us have it.  No spoilers from me though, that's Zantai's perogative.  ;D  I don't want to get fired!

Not quite 2 years since Zantai asked me if I'd like to join the playtesting team so not that long.  Doing AoM was a real eye-opener since I'd only helped test a few patches before that.  Now I have a much better idea of what needs to be done.  :)

Also looking forward to testing Medierra's new city builder when he decides to let us play with it.  They were my first gaming experiences when I got my own PC and I still enjoy playing them from time to time when I want a break from hacking and slashing.

While the desert area will be part of the new expansion, it's not all dunes and sand.  Here's some of the other areas we'll be visiting.

Update on this - the expansion has been pushed back to some time in 1st quarter of 2019.

https://forums.crateentertainment.com/t/forthcoming-forgotten-gods-expac-what-we-know-so-far-part-ii/46489/4

Zantai explained their reasoning in the 14th September stream:

"morpheus____ :@CrateEntertainment can you tell us more about the release date?

Yeah, that question's been coming up over and over and what I'm going to tell you guys is that we're actually going to be pushing the expansion back to quarter one 2019. Probably not the answer people wanted to hear to that question. There are a couple of reasons for that: We want more time to keep our Crate Entertainment quality bar high. The expansion has gotten really big as is our standard, as you can imagine. So once again a big expansion with way too much stuff, and just as we went through things in internal testing we weren't really fully happy with them as they were and given that we have that option to extend the deadline - we're not bound to publisher due dates here - so we thought why stick to what we think is okay, when we know we can do better. So we're actually revising some of the areas we built, we've had some animations that needed revising so yes, sorry, going to come out quarter one 2019, not 2018. Official. It's not coming this year."

Or, as Medierra, put it so succinctly in the 5th October stream:

"Basically I went to playtest it and I flipped out and said everything needed to be redone. It's coming together but it hasn't reached baller status yet."

Not sure if he was joking or not.  :-\

im sure it was joking!

if they can polish then things more, why not delay a litle longer.

Also im sure the expac will be bigger than they expected to be :P

Totally agree sauruz.  If they're not happy then take the time to fix/make better since they're not tied to a set release date no matter what.

And yeah, last heard the expansion was 60% the size of AoM, but that was some months ago and given Crate's history of overproducing and giving us MOAR I won't be surprised if it's bigger than that figure.  ;D

one of the reasons these guys find success is because they themselves also playtest their games.. I've read that many devs now don't play their games once they become developers.. they get their own playtesters which is perfectly fine.. but if you really want to connect to your fans, you should play your own games as well

Yeah, the playtesting group are beta testers.  We get stuff after the devs are happy with it.  We then add our feedback and they take it from there.

So what are requirements to become a beta tester and do you get game later for free?

Zantai laid out the criteria in this thread a little while ago.

"With the next patch impacting Crucible and Forgotten Gods on the way, this is your opportunity to check out the content early and be a part of GD development.

If you are interested in joining this wave of new Praetorians, please PM me on the forum with some info:

- Your experience with the Crucible
- Your experience with Grim Dawn and various builds
- Why you think you would make a good addition to the playtester team

Do note that we are very much on the look out for players that make a positive contribution to this community. So if you just joined the forum, this will not necessarily rule you out, but it will impact your chances."

"Just remember: being a positive contribution to this community is a strong motivator for why we recruit a particular player, not just time played or how quickly you can beat Ravager. The way you present your criticisms is also just as important. Constructive posts that try to be objective without sass (ok, maybe little sass) go a long way!"

https://forums.crateentertainment.com/t/playtester-ranks-expanding/45149

That was the one and, so far, only time they've invited people to apply.  Usually they just do it internally to come up with people to invite.  That's how it worked for me. First I knew about it was when I got a PM from Zantai inviting me to join the group.

I assume we get to keep our copies of the game after all the playtesting is finished, but since it's still ongoing can't say for sure. I have my GOG version anyway so if I lose the Steam one I'm not worried.

What? How could you not playtest your own game? The though has literally never occurred to me that I would just make something and shove it out the window at the players.

Really?

Oh, and Medea, I am so glad you are a playtester, you have always been so diligent and hardworking with an eye towards the fun. They are lucky to have you!  :))

Well, how much Crate do themselves I don't know.  Obviously they're testing whether things actually work or not, but how much just general playthrough to see how it's flowing, etc, I've no idea.  I think Zantai said once that his wife had done her fair share of playtesting, but whether that's still the case again I don't know.  Plus I think it's having a fresh set (or sets with a group) of eyes on something catches things that otherwise get missed.  Spelling mistakes, words/punctuation missing or incorrect for the context of the sentence, things spawning where they shouldn't, blockages where a path should be clear, etc.  I certainly picked up some of those during testing of AoM.

Medea, is this just an extension of Grim Dawn or a new game?
Years ago they talked of a totally new game of the same type. I haven't played much since the last extension. My old eyes couldn't hack all the darkness.
I know Grim Dawn is suppose to be, well Grim. Got just too dark for me.

As sauruz said it's a second expansion oldage.  They announced it almost a year ago since AoM sold so well as has the base game.  It's likely to be the last big content push, but they'll continue to support the game so long as it's make sense to do so financially and they still have ideas of stuff they may push out as smaller content.

Next project is the upcoming town builder that Medierra's been working on for the last couple of years, but he's been so tight lipped about it that I haven't really had anything worth posting/linking to for it yet.  Hopefully once FG is out and things quieten down a bit he'll be able to reveal all.

I know what you mean by the darkest though.  I prefer to play it with the gamma turned all the way up because I hate fighting in the dark.

Thanks for letting me know. Yes, he talked  of towns and railroads. Sounded like a total new game back then. I've been getting all updates at no  cost.

What I really like when something new appear for GrimDawn game is change on GrimDawn forum theme. Now is Yellow. About 2 years ago it was red and letters were done by pro artist, that red was amazing, but changes are always welcome :)

We're nearly there.  Crate have requested their release date with Steam so assuming no major bugs appear last minute it's just a case of Steam coming back to them with confirmation of the date.  Last GM before the release came out today with the news that all being well FG will release some time in the last week of March.

Just thought I'd update this.  Zantai said in the 19th April live dev stream that Forgotten Gods has sold over 100,000 copies and overall base game and all the DLCs have now passed 3 million copies sold.

I'm playing the complete game - with both xpacks - for the first time since march 30th, as an Soldier/Inquisitor male.
It's almost a month now and today I've barely started the Forgotten Gods.

Holy sh*t, this game is huge.

Now I'm not sure what to do next after finishing 2nd xpack:
- going pet masteries female with two of the Necromancer/Occultist/Shaman choices
- playing with Grimarillion mod (and never look back at the base game ;) )
- waiting paitently for Reign of Terror full release
- ...other options?

Decisions, decisions...

Ah yes: 10/10, TQ and GD, the best two single player h'n's on the market.

Now I'm wondering why I didn't go with full melee combo with Soldier/Oathkeeper?

Beats me.

Note it's been nerfed from this as adoomgod pushed it to its limits while testing.  Still, it's a fun skill to use and I still enjoy watching the video even now.  ;D

Oh look, Diablo's Barbarian! ;)

But seriously, what is this class - God Mode?
Even when character is going through the aetherial fields, he's not taking damage.

This is cheating. /jk

That was a Templar (Oath/Arcanist).  Zantai said in a stream a while back that he thought Warders (Soldier/Shaman) and Warlords (Soldier/Oath) would be vying for the most tanky class once Oathkeeper was available.

Yeah, game is pretty big now.  People complain about having to do 3 runs, yet keep asking for a 3rd expansion.  ::)  Of course you can now skip difficulties so don't have to do all of them, but for those of us who like playing all 3 adding yet another expansion would make it really long to get through.
