Kiting 101 by botebote77

10 kiting rules i developed for myself over the years. You can also follow these when playing other games, not just TQ.

1.) kill every enemy you see before you advance to the next area.. you want as much running space as you can have

2.) when you're finally doing serious kiting, do not go into places you haven't been yet.. those dark areas on the map, don't go there.. go backwards to the areas you have cleared in (1)

3.) try to break up a mob.. see if you can aggro 1 or 2 at a time

4.) when kiting in open areas where you know you won't encounter additional mobs (usually against bosses), don't go backwards unless you really have to.. go sidewards.. in fact, everytime you can go sidewards, go sidewards instead of backwards.. that way you can attack easier and you also keep them in your sight while dodging their attacks

5.) look at the area and see if there's a spot where you can be in an advantageous position.. like if there's a stair, try to get the enemy below and you above.. if you're below, you're at a disadvantage

6.) use CCs.. moving faster than your enemies and being able to freely move can spell the difference between dying and surviving.. the less running you have to do, the better

7.) learn the behaviors of monsters especially bosses.. what spells they cast and what do they do before casting a spell

8.) don't drink health pots very late.. potions have cooldowns.. if you drink a health pot when your health is already very low, it only takes a few more hits before you need to drink another potion.. your health pot might not be ready yet by that time

9.) if on a 50/50 choice between attacking and dodging, choose dodging.. your first objective is to not get hit.. or not get hit much

10.) you will still get hit so don't even think you can get by without any resists

necro mode.. but instead of saying how i got into TQ, I'll just try to remember the different characters I've played.. (there may be more i just can't remember).. before i got into TQ, i already played different RPGs and MMORPGs so i wasn't a total noob.. can't remember the exact order of these:

TQ:

druid - my very first character in this game.. was still learning the game and i can't remember what build i was aiming for.. probably nothing.. just playing and adjusting.. didn't even finish normal.. was just playing on a not so good PC in a certain gaming shop.. had a lot of freezes

TQIT:

prophet - my first character in TQIT.. self-found.. i think it was ice shard and distort reality build? but not sure anymore.. finished

conqueror - stopped somewhere in epic.. got too bored to continue.. felt it was too much mindless leftclicking :)

elementalist - tried lots of different tactics.. played it ice sharder.. played it VO and eruption.. eruption and hiding in stone all day.. but late game i got >90% CDR and found that lighting bolt alone can beat the whole game.. this was crazy.. monsters can't even get near me.. finished

assassin - dual wield melee.. might be the only time i enjoyed playing a pure melee.. finished

Poinas' ternion harrowing build - stopped somewhere in normal.. found it too difficult to follow

ice shard paladin - stopped because it was just time to stop playing TQ.. i stopped too many times playing this game only to come back each time.. but this was the only time i enjoyed playing defense

haruspex - this was crazy.. i started with the idea of playing a decent archer casting distort reality when mobs get close.. later i thought "I'm not even casting distort?".. and then even later "sh!t this is too OP I'm just standing in the middle of a mob and I'm not even getting hit".. and then to make it worse, whenever i play multiplayer with my nephew, he doesn't want to play in the same area as me because I'm clearing mobs before they even get to melee range.. i googled and i found in forums it was because of very high DA and scatter shot was OP.. of course i finished it.. no deaths iirc.. the class was just an abomination back then.. even someone who wasn't following any build can make it immortal

ranger - spear melee with no pets.. first time i started trying permanent call of the hunt.. stopped because again it was just time

i also played brigand and oracle but those characters were not mine.. i also played my nephew's conqueror.. it reached legendary but he also didn't finish it because he also found it boring.. i think i also played a melee dream.. harbinger? templar? can't remember.. i never reached 100% CDR on any of my characters

TQ UL and SV:
can't really remember.. i think i played 3-4 characters here.. 2 of which i think was hunting/warfare and occult/defense

TQAE/R (it was only sometime in AE that i started trying crazy builds):

bonecharmer - self-found.. started as straight up melee.. late game i thought about equipping CDR.. i discovered it was about 65% to get permanent call of the hunt and unearthly power.. finished AE but did not continue to ragnarok content

knifethrower sorcerer - also self-found.. was going really well until i accidentally deleted it somewhere early legendary

assassin - started playing it the same way i played it in TQIT but felt that i get more and more squishy the more i progress.. tried traps somewhere in legendary and found that it really works well with battle standard.. from a combination of throwing crazy ideas with another caster lover over at reddit and me finding Key of Elysium, i came about the melee petmaster caster assassin build (lolz).. finished AE but did not continue ragnarok content

avenger - deleted it in its early teen levels

ternion oracle - deleted it in its early teen levels

knifethrower sorcerer - i really liked it so i made another one.. it's the one from my guide and the one from my videos :) .. finished ragnarok but skipped act 5 normal and epic

illusionist - i also tried lots of different builds here but settled for pets and traps.. with throwing knife and throwing weapon.. still somewhere in act 5 legendary but i feel like continuing it from time to time.. also skipped act 5 normal and epic

physical damage ternion - this was a joke build.. just made a lvl 60 character with the help of defiler.. actually it's a nerf because i didn't bother giving it quest rewards like bonus skill/stat points, health points, total damage bonus and resistance bonus.. i just tried if it's viable in legendary and yep somehow it is.. but very difficult to equip

stonespeaker - started as lvl 40 but deleted it somewhere in normal

haruspex - the mage build.. currently dancing with 3 Fafnirs

thunderer - it's the one from my videos :)  somewhere in epic.. i also plan to continue playing it from time to time

petmaster skinchanger - somewhere in epic act 5.. guhh can get really boring

dreamkiller - uhhh.. what happened to this character of mine? can't remember.. but it's a str/int caster/trapper build
(nevertheless i made sure to try every skill in every mastery :) )

post some of those runs :)

and then include a pic on your guide.. use the BBCode so it automatically appears.. would make your guide look nicer

if it's me i still would put points on monster lure :)  ..  like so:

take down + necrosis?

those 2 are near useless skills i don't want to think about it.. I've maxed gouge on at least 1 of my characters before (endgame of course) but I've never maxed open wound.. spending 6 points on gouge feels like a waste.. spending 12 points on open wound feels like a waste.. arguing over 2 near useless skills feels like a waste ;D

no i just posted it in the live chat section.. traps don't get runeword:explode and burn but you know what would make it closer to Seryu Ubiquitous build? if core dweller has colossus form  ;D

for the record, i hated Seryu..i liked Sheele
this girl is scary

Spirit IT / Re: Poinas' Pwning with Spirit Guide
« on: 28 April 2018, 04:38:27 »
this is the first and i think only guide i ever tried to follow word for word in this game.. and i stopped because i found it difficult to divide attributes into str, dex, and int.. that was years ago and i didn't have good items yet.. theoretically, this should be really good in IT because bosses were not resistant yet to reduction to enemy health.. then you have necrosis which makes it even stronger.. as a beginner though with mostly self-found items i found it hard to follow

even though i don't follow guides word for word, i get bits and info from them and i have applied different strategies i learned for my characters.. from Fozzie's magician build, to CrocMagnum's avenger build, to archer brigand build, to the different ice shard builds.. i learned many things from those builds.. if anyone of you have guides to post or guides of their own to post, keep em comin' please :)

Lightning - refresh - lightning had been efficient even before AER
just like what i said.. i also like plague, lethal strike, refresh, lethal strike and plague, seal of fate, refresh, seal of fate

I'll just put this here in case dude missed it.. @Laionidas any ideas for a Seryu Ubiquitous build?

True, but Refresh itself is also on (a relatively long) cooldown, so it doesn't work for spamming skills. The way I see it, Refresh is there for multi-pet masters to keep all their pets up all the time.

Sorry, I don't know why I said it.
refresh is a good skill though and in a way, you're still correct.. it's just it's rarely worth maxing

Especially now with AE and Ragnarok though, manoeuvring, crowd control, and crowd control redundancies seems to be the most reliable means of increasing survivability, and casters should have acces to plenty.
i think there are very few people that think the same way.. don't worry though you can be sure i agree with you :))

true.. and also for casting spells 2x in succession.. like lightning bolt, refresh, lightning bolt.. but you want it at lvl 1 only.. it's only worth maxing for builds that relies on making long cooldown skills permanent.. like permanent ancestral warriors, permanent outsider, permanent guardian stones, permanent call of the hunt
That, I've considered too.

I wonder though how it compares to Dream, since ToC gets you a long way too, while being less static.
yep.. that i cannot say which is better.. what i do know is briar ward should not be used against Typhon

actually, nature because of briar ward.. helps big time with survivability as well as provide less energy cost.. so a druid icesharder actually is less gear dependant than other caster builds.. briar ward health now scales with difficulty.. as far as i remember

i find it hard to vote.. if it's caster build, i choose nature, dream, and rune.. if it's melee, warfare.. if it's archer/throwing weapon, hunting

i considered storm as the first mastery

edit: now that i think of it.. almost all my builds relies on CDR :)

Farming Runs / Re: Some of my playthroughs
« on: 26 April 2018, 21:28:43 »

played a few minutes.. all fafnir runs.. no tricks seem to work.. tried scroll of the sky's rage and greater scroll of the earthquake, stun don't work.. divine scroll of sun's blessing, maybe he's weak against burn? nope useless.. distort reality, maybe he can be petrified even for a very short time.. nope no luck.. greater scroll of necromancer, undeads should be immune/resistant to vit and poison right? all 3 skeletons dead in 5 seconds or less.. the best scrolls that work seem to be maddened god and unbroken fortitude.. and the best strategy seem to be kill as fast as you can while being very careful.. no effective strategies found and i got 2 deaths hohohohoho.. the damages he deals seem to be vit, poison, burn, and maybe bleed (but not sure).. but it looks like it's all DoTs
