Gouge - still useless?

Back in the TQ:IT days, having points in Gouge resulted in a net DPS loss as its animation was slower than a regular attack and the added Bleeding damage was negligible.

I know that the damage has been increased by 50% since TQ:IT but that alone might not be enough to make it useful. Have their been any other changes that would make Gouge actually useful?

There haven't been any changes to the skill that I know of, the animation is still perhaps a bit slower than regular attacks. In my own playthroughs I only get Gouge if I use bleeding as an important source of damage (as in, I have modifiers to it and flat DoT from gear / Rogue mastery). Otherwise the damage is negligible and can do more harm than good, especially when fighting reflective mobs and having low bleeding resistance (which can happen often).

the animation is still slower.. the biggest difference is bleed now scales with dex, in TQIT it didn't

i personally find DoTs helpful in AoE attacks: hit A, B, C, D, E monsters with DoT, hit A again, then B. by the time you get to D and E, most of their health are depleted already. is that applicable to gouge though? not sure

gouge may be useless by itself but mix it with other skills and it may have it's uses (hello necrosis)

btw anyone knows if gouge also applies to thrown weapons?  i haven't checked in-game yet

Based on the description I recall, I don't think it applies to throwns, I might be wrong.

Well, Gouge isn't AoE, is it? It's a separate %proc attack like volley. It won't apply to any other skills.

btw, description in-game devs might have just missed changing it or just didn't care, just like life leech and vit res

description in skill calculators, don't believe that too because yours truly started not caring changing anything there long ago.. and jollygreenfox missed changing many things there too, that other people noticed

I just tested throwing weapons and Gouge and nope, no bleeding damage. Works fine with spears as intended though.

I always thought that Gouge was just another proc like Volley or Pulverize; allowing two procs to happen at once brings up issues with animations and damage spikes.

If Gouge has a 20% chance to stack with any other proc that was going off then it would certainly be worth investing in no matter how little damage it does.

If it somehow procs with other combat techniques then it surely wasn't meant to. How would it be different from Open Wound in this case? Except for being more weapon-restricted and not applying to Throwing Knives. The phrasing on the skills is clearly different, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to confirm in-game., if there's still a debate.

Ooof... that really narrows down the number of viable builds for Gouge!

Gouge procs for active attack skills like Marksmanship, not just auto attacks. You can even hear it. When it procs you will hear the bow firing sound two times.
