Mesh - .mif file not working

Hey, I'm trying to put a staff in my druids hand. He's based on the "enchanter.msh" from "xpack2".
When giving it to him as an item, it just lays flat on the ground below him.
So I tried adding it to his weapon bone for the right arm via .mif I created with the "Viewer.exe" from the game directory.

I created the mesh with my textures and with the .mif via the Art Manager.
But it just won't work. The staff doesn't show up in the editor nor in the game.
